Serum Uric Acid
Uric acid is a produced in the body when foods that contain organic compounds called purines are broken down. Some of these foods are liver, dried beans, beer, and wine. Purines are also produced in the body when cells are broken down. Uric acid in the blood is filtered by the kidneys and is excreted through urine. .
Sometimes, the body produces too much uric acid or does not filter out enough of it. It is most commonly observed in increased cell death due to cancer or cancer treatment. The most common reason why doctors order Uric Acid test is when he suspects gout. A gout is the most commonest type of arthritis.
Uric acid test is also used on patients undergoing cancer treatment (chemotherapy or radiation) to monitor level of uric acid in blood.
