ESR – Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate
Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate is the rate at which red blood cells sediment in a period of one hour. An abnormal result gives an indication in to a wide range of disorders but is not a confirmatory test for any condition. Hence it is widely used as a non-specific routine test. Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate is a routine non-specific test that gives a general indication of one’s health and is never used as a confirmatory test for any condition.
Advantages of calculating ESR are :
- Quick turnaround time
- It can rule out or indicate a presence of certain disorders
- It helps the doctor in further diagnosis
The erythrocyte sedimentation rate is a relatively simple, inexpensive, non-specific test that has been used for many years to help detect inflammation associated with conditions such as infections, cancers, and autoimmune diseases.
